Hey Jennifer, just downloaded the zip to checkout the coding and noticed you have the background and header saved as gif files at 830 kb and 141 kb respectively. Total images for the site add up to just over 1 mb 
I changed them over to high quality jpg without any lost in quality and got it down to a total size of 395kb which is still large but much more manageable for people with 56k dial up.
I could have used a tiling background to shave off another 100K getting the site to load in around 25 seconds with a 56k.
Not disparaging your skills, just wanted to let you know that the site could be better optimized for people that don't have broad band.
